CLIMATE CHANGE AND SPECIALTY COFFEE: WHAT NEXT?
Climate Change is one of the most pressing concerns the world over and its impending environmental and economic repercussions can no longer be ignored. Some countries & industries have already started facing the impact of this phenomenon significantly and in the years to come, Climate Change will transform the way industries operate.
In India, unexpected rains have dramatically affected the coffee crop, causing ripe cherries to split open and dry out on the tree before being picked. Not only this, the rainfall during the first round of picking has also impacted the overall yield. This harvest season, on average, around 30% of the crop was lost for Indian producers. These changing environmental factors and subsequent results have pushed Indian coffee producers to find innovative solutions to save as much of the coffee crop as possible.
We, at Blue Tokai, work closely with over 40 partner farms across the country to source India’s highest scoring coffees and roast them for you. And, as a brand that has closely seen the impact of climate change over the last decade, we would like to start a meaningful conversation around the same phenomenon.
This session will bring together over 100 years of combined knowledge from producers, roasters and industry experts to answer what we, as an industry collective, can do to minimise this impact by finding innovative solutions, while also working towards reducing the burden on the environment through various sustainable practices in the coffee industry.
Joining the panel will be:
Matt Chitharanjan, Co-Founder and CEO, Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters
Vaibhav Bindal, Founder, Quick Brown Fox Coffee Roasters
Pranoy Thipaiah, Managing Partner, Kerehaklu Plantation
Rohan Kuriyan, from MS Estate, Balanoor Plantations
