FAQs

A few of our frequently asked questions:

Q. How old is Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters and where is its presence?

A. Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters was started in 2013. With stand alone cafes, individual customers and B2B partners across India, and roasteries in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi, we are the largest specialty coffee company in India.

We supply pan-India through our roasteries and operate a network of ~30 cafes throughout the country. You can read more about our cafes here.

Q. How are you different from any other (specialty) coffee brand?

A. We believe that constant learning is the key to always pushing coffee forward, and this sets us apart from other brands in the market. We are consistently researching, testing and implementing best practices throughout our business ecosystem to push our own boundaries. Being able to share this knowledge with our customers is very important to us. Transparency to us is much more than simply where we get our beans from.

Our partners have access to the same specialized training as our own baristas at our training centres in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. Not only is this knowledge invaluable to our wholesale customers to improve their consistency in brewing and tasting, but it is also essential for them to run a consistent and sustainable business that their customers come to trust.

Q. Why are your beans so expensive?

A. We work directly with farms in southern India across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. We only source beans that score greater than 80 points on the cupping table—this is what makes our coffee ‘specialty’. We work rigorously hard to ensure some of the best coffee beans of the country make it to our roastery.

Q. How much coffee can I order at once?

A. While we have no minimum order requirement, we encourage all our wholesale customers to use only what they will require for a period of three weeks because coffee starts to lose its freshness and unique flavors three weeks after it’s been roasted.

Q. Do you roast coffee to order?

A. Yes, we roast coffee only after an order is placed and dispatch it the next day.

Q. How does freshness relate to the quality of coffee?

A. Many of the flavor and aroma compounds that make coffee delicious are fragile, and begin to break down within weeks of roasting. Most commercial coffee is roasted weeks, if not months, before it reaches the customer. To ensure our customers can enjoy fresh, flavorful specialty coffee, we do things differently and roast our coffee Monday through Friday.

Q. Can we brew coffee as soon as it’s roasted?

A. Carbon dioxide created during the roasting process needs to be released from the beans in order for the coffee to brew properly. This is called degassing—a naturally occurring phenomenon where the freshly roasted coffee beans release carbon dioxide. Roasters typically let the beans degas for 24 hours before they begin cupping. For lighter roasts suitable for manual brewing, the coffee will be good to brew in 2-3 days after roasting while darker roasts suitable for espresso work best after resting for 4-5 days.

Q. When will I receive my order?

A. We ship orders every weekday from Monday through Friday. If you place an order before 9 am on a weekday, we'll roast your order the next day and dispatch the day after.

Q. Which coffee/blend will you be offering us?

A. The following three options are available for our wholesale partners:

  • 100% Arabica single estate coffee
  • 100% Arabica blend
  • Arabica:Robusta Blend (80:20)

Q. What’s the best way of storing coffee?

A. Oxygen and moisture are coffee’s biggest enemies, and hence, one must always store coffee in an airtight container in a cool and dry place. Storing coffee in the fridge is also not recommended. The condensation that takes place sees moisture accumulating on the beans or powder every time you take the bag out of the fridge/freezer, open and close the bag, and then place it back into the fridge or freezer. These droplets of water will lead to rapid deterioration of the quality of your coffee.

Ideally, it’s recommended that you buy coffee every 3 weeks and store it in an airtight container. If the container is transparent or translucent, place it in a cupboard or dark area.

Q. Can we use Blue Tokai’s logo on our menu and promote your brand at our outlet/online?

A. The marketing team will be able to help you with collaterals if they think that your brand guidelines align with ours. However, you will need an approval (in writing) to use our logo unit.
You can reach out to our marketing team for more details on community@bluetokaicoffee.com.

Q. Do you offer franchisee?

A. All our cafes are self-owned and hence, we do not offer franchisee. However, we have various collaborative models in place.

  • We can assist you in selecting and sourcing the right equipment or lease it to you
  • We can supply you with high quality Arabica coffee sourced from South Indian coffee plantations, and also provide training for your team.

Q. Do you provide trained staff?

A. No, but we can help you train your team at our training centers. The following topics are touched upon during this training:

  • Fundamentals of espresso
  • Fundamentals of milk
  • Advanced espresso module
  • Filter brewing

For on-site training, there will be an additional charge of travel and accommodation of the trainer.
